The Strategy of the Roaring Game
Curling is a fascinating winter sport where teams slide heavy granite stones across a long sheet of ice toward a circular target. This target, known as the house, consists of four concentric rings that look like a large bullseye. The goal is to leave your stones closer to the center, or the button, than your opponent.
As the stone glides down the rink, two teammates use specialized brooms to vigorously sweep the surface ahead of it. This sweeping action creates friction that slightly melts the pebbled ice, reducing resistance and helping the stone travel further or curl less. Because the stones make a distinct rumbling sound as they travel over the frozen water droplets, curling is often nicknamed the roaring game.
Coloring the Stones and Gear
The equipment used in these matches offers interesting details to shade. Players wear unique footwear designed specifically for the rink. One shoe features a smooth slider to help the athlete glide effortlessly during their delivery, while the other has a rubber gripper to provide solid traction for pushing off and sweeping.
The stones themselves are traditionally made from a specific type of dense gray granite found in Scotland. While the rock is gray, the handles attached to the top are brightly colored, usually in contrasting shades like bright red and yellow, so spectators and officials can easily tell the teams apart.
