How to Carve a Unicorn Pumpkin with a Stencil

  1. Pick a stencil and your pumpkin size. We scale the print so the unicorn fits the smooth front of your pumpkin.
  2. Open and scoop the pumpkin. Cut the lid in the back or bottom. Scrape the front wall to about 1 in (2.5 cm) thick.
  3. Tape the stencil on. Small snips in the paper edge help it lie flat on the round pumpkin.
  4. Poke the outline. Push a pin tool through the lines about every ⅛ in (3 mm). Take the paper off and connect the dots with a marker.
  5. Carve in number order. Numbers on the sheet show the order: small parts like eyelashes first, big shapes last. Adults should handle the saw.
  6. Light it up. An LED tea light is bright and safe. A unicorn silhouette looks magical in front of a glowing moon.

Carving with a phone next to you? Open a stencil and tap Carve along. Your phone shows one piece at a time and the screen stays on. Too young for a saw? Kids under 6 can poke the dots, or tap Color it and color the unicorn online.

Moon Window, Silhouette or Unicorn Face?

Moon window example

Moon window

A big round moon glows and the unicorn stays as dark pumpkin skin. It looks great from the street.

Silhouette example

Silhouette

The whole unicorn glows. You cut only a few big shapes, so it is the easiest kind to carve with kids.

Unicorn face example

Unicorn face

A spiral horn, sleepy eyelashes and cute ears go right on the pumpkin. The pumpkin becomes the unicorn's head.

Measure your pumpkin from the bottom to the stem before you print, so the stencil fits the smooth front.

What Size Stencil Fits My Pumpkin?

The stencil should cover about two thirds of your pumpkin's height. Every stencil here is checked at each size: if a bridge would get too thin, that size is not offered.

Most carving problems come from thin bridges, a soft pumpkin or a stencil that is too big.

Questions and Answers

How do I put a unicorn stencil on a pumpkin?

Print the stencil at the size for your pumpkin and tape it to the smooth front. Push a pin tool or a thumbtack through the lines about every ⅛ inch (3 mm). Take the paper off and connect the dots with a washable marker. Then carve along the dotted lines in number order.

Is it better to cut a hole in the top or bottom of a pumpkin?

Cutting the hole in the bottom or back is better. It keeps the stem looking nice and stops the top from caving in as the pumpkin dries. It is also easier to place your LED light inside.

Why did a piece fall out of my pumpkin?

A piece of pumpkin skin falls out when nothing holds it. Carvers recommend bridges of at least ¼ inch (6 mm) at the printed size. Our software checks every stencil at every size we offer: if a bridge gets thinner than that, the size is not offered.

How do you carve fine details like eyelashes or a spiral horn?

Scrape the inside of the pumpkin wall down to about 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick. Use a small, thin saw for tight curves. Always carve the smallest details first while the pumpkin wall is still strong.

How do I make my carved unicorn pumpkin last longer?

Keep it out of direct sunlight and freezing rain. You can rub petroleum jelly on the cut edges to hold moisture in. Using an LED light instead of a candle also keeps the inside from drying out too fast.

How to have a pumpkin carving contest?

Set up a table with tools, markers, and printed stencils. Give everyone a pumpkin and an LED light. You can vote on categories like cutest unicorn, best glowing horn, or neatest carving.
