Getting to Know the Well-Armed Herbivore

The Euoplocephalus was a large, plant-eating ankylosaurid that lived during the Late Cretaceous period in what is now North America. Its name means well-armed head, which makes sense when you look at the thick bone covering its skull. Even its eyelids were armored to protect it from predators.

When coloring these pages, you can experiment with different earthy tones for the thick scutes and spikes that run down its back and sides.

Coloring the Armor and Tail Club

Because this prehistoric creature relied on camouflage as well as physical defense, natural colors like olive green, dusty brown, and slate gray are realistic choices. You can use lighter shades for the soft underbelly and darker, harder colors for the heavy armor.

The massive tail club was made of fused bone and used to fend off large predators. In our prehistoric landscape pages, try contrasting the dull, rocky tones of the dinosaur's armor with bright orange lava or vibrant green ancient plants.

Options for Different Skill Levels

We organized this collection to suit various ages and motor skills. The cute cartoon designs have minimal details and large open spaces, making them ideal for preschoolers using thick crayons. Older children and adults might prefer the realistic side profiles or the intricate mandala design, which require more precision.

  • Use broad washable markers for the simple baby dinosaur pages.
  • Try colored pencils to shade the textured bony plates on the realistic sheets.
  • Blend greens and browns to create a realistic prehistoric background.
