What Makes Nurse Sharks Unique
When coloring these pages, you will notice a few physical traits that set this species apart from other sharks. They have two fleshy appendages called barbels near their nostrils, which they use to sense food hidden in the sand.
Their mouths are positioned very low on their flat heads, ideal for a benthic lifestyle. Unlike many pelagic species, they can pump water over their gills, allowing them to remain completely still while resting in a coral reef or rocky cavern during the day.
Choosing Colors for Bottom-Dwelling Sharks
Real nurse sharks are usually solid yellowish-brown, grayish-brown, or tan. Juveniles sometimes have small dark spots that fade as they mature. To make your ocean floor scenes look realistic, use muted earth tones for the shark and contrast them with bright colors for the surrounding environment.
- Use vibrant oranges and pinks for the coral structures.
- Add deep greens and browns for the kelp forests.
- Color the sand with pale yellows and light beige to highlight the shark's shadow.
Using These Printables at Home or School
The cute cartoon sharks work well for early childhood units on marine life. Children can practice coloring inside the lines while learning about friendly ocean animals like a starfish or sea turtle.
For older students and adults, the realistic scenes and floral mandalas provide a relaxing way to study marine biology. You can practice shading techniques on the smooth skin of these complex cartilaginous fish while filling in the intricate background patterns. Teachers can use the realistic PDFs as a quiet activity after a science lesson on ocean habitats.
