Three Ways to Color the Word Snowshoe

The term snowshoe brings up three distinct winter subjects. First is the snowshoe hare, a wild rabbit known for its large hind feet that act like natural flotation devices on deep snow. Their fur changes from brown in summer to white in winter to blend in with the snowy winter landscapes.

Second is the traditional winter footwear used for hiking. Our trail scenes show people and animals wearing these webbed frames to walk across deep drifts without sinking. Finally, the Snowshoe cat is a special breed known for its white paws, which look like it just stepped in a fresh snowbank.

Adding Depth to Snowy Scenes

Coloring white subjects like a winter hare or a snowy trail requires a bit of technique. Instead of leaving the paper blank, use light shades of blue, lavender, or pale gray to create shadows. This gives the white fur and snowdrifts a three-dimensional look.

For the traditional wooden snowshoes, try layering different browns and tans to mimic the texture of ash wood and rawhide lacing. When coloring the playful kittens, remember that their points (ears, face, and tail) are usually darker, while their distinctive paws remain bright white. Add a touch of pink for their noses and paw pads.

Educational Winter Activities

These printables work well for winter biology or outdoor education lessons. Teachers and parents can use them to explain animal adaptation and winter survival during the colder months. Children can learn about the different ways humans and animals navigate deep snow while they color.

  • Discuss how the hare's large feet help it travel over snow without sinking.
  • Compare animal tracks with the wide prints left by human snowshoe equipment.
  • Talk about the history of webbed footwear in cold climates and how it compares to modern winter hiking gear.
