Understanding the Advent Wreath Tradition

The Advent wreath is a central part of Christian preparation for Christmas. Most wreaths consist of an evergreen circle, representing eternal life, holding four candles. The circular shape has no beginning or end, while the branches, often made of pine or cedar, stand for continuous life even in the middle of winter.

Three candles are typically purple, symbolizing prayer and penance, while the pink candle lit on the third Sunday represents joy. Many of our classic Advent wreaths include a fifth white candle in the center. This is the Christ candle, lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day to celebrate the arrival of Jesus.

Ideas for Sunday School and Home

Coloring an Advent wreath is a quiet, focused activity for Sunday school classrooms or religious education at home. Teachers can use the simple kids designs as a weekly craft to help children understand the passage of time during the season.

Ways to use these printables during the weeks of Advent:

  • Color one new candle flame each Sunday as the real wreath is lit.
  • Write weekly prayers or scripture verses around the outside of the wreath.
  • Use the pages featuring the words Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love to guide weekly lessons.
  • Cut out the finished wreaths to decorate classroom bulletin boards.

Coloring the Wreaths and Candles

When coloring the pine branches, try layering different shades of green to give the needles depth. You can add texture to the church altar wreaths by blending browns and golds on the stands and surrounding furniture. Many traditional wreaths are also decorated with a ribbon, berries, or pinecones.

For the candle flames, use a mix of yellow, orange, and a touch of red at the base to make them look bright and warm against the paper. If you are coloring a Catholic wreath, remember to use purple for the first, second, and fourth candles, and rose or pink for the third.
