How to Color Frosty Ice Formations
Coloring frozen water requires a light touch. Instead of leaving the ice completely white, use pale blues, light purples, and soft grays to show how translucent ice catches the light. For the hanging icicles on roofs, try blending a very light blue near the top where the ice is thickest, fading to white at the sharp tip. You can also add a faint yellow or pink reflection to mimic the winter sun shining on the frozen drips.
Using Icicle Pages for Winter Science
These printables work well alongside lessons about winter weather and the water cycle. As children color the melting drops, you can discuss how snow melts in the sun and refreezes in the cold air to form these tapered spikes. The winter cabins and nature scenes show how these formations appear on different surfaces like pine branches, wooden eaves, and even metal mailboxes.
Adding Extra Winter Details
To make the ice scenes look even colder, you can add your own weather effects in the background. The winter pages in this collection offer plenty of empty sky space for creativity.
- Draw falling snow or swirling wind lines around the frozen caves.
- Use silver gel pens to make the tips of the stalactites sparkle.
- Add a bright blue sky behind the bare branches to contrast with the white snow.
