Learning About Earth's History

Coloring these scenes is a great way to introduce kids to earth science. A paleontologist studies the history of life on Earth through fossils, which are the preserved remains of ancient plants and animals. As children color the excavation scenes, you can explain how these scientists carefully remove dirt to reveal clues about the past. They often work in dry, dusty environments, making desert landscapes a common backdrop for their field work.

Tools of the Trade

Field researchers do not just use big shovels. They rely on delicate instruments to protect fragile bones.

  • Dusting brushes sweep away loose sand without scratching the bone surface.
  • Rock hammers and chisels help break apart hard stone surrounding the find.
  • Magnifying glasses allow scientists to examine tiny details, like insects trapped in amber.

Coloring Tips for Dinosaurs and Dirt

Most dig sites consist of earth tones, but you can still make the pages vibrant. Use different shades of brown, tan, and gray for the rocks and soil. When coloring a dinosaur bone or skeleton, try using cream or light yellow instead of stark white to make the fossils look genuinely ancient. Give the scientists bright shirts or colorful hats to help them stand out against the rocky background.
