Understanding Archery Equipment

Archery requires specific gear to hit the mark safely and accurately. In our equipment section, you will find different types of bows to color. A recurve bow has tips that curve away from the archer, providing more power and speed to the arrow. Modern hunters and target shooters often use a compound bow, which features a system of pulleys and cables to make drawing heavy weights easier.

You will also see protective gear in these illustrations. Archers wear an arm guard on their bow arm to protect their skin from the snap of the bowstring. A finger tab or release aid helps them pull the string back smoothly. Arrows are stored in a quiver, which can be worn on the hip or back. The feathers at the back of the arrow, called fletching, help it fly straight and can be colored in bright neon shades so they are easy to find in the grass.

Coloring the Target Rings

Standard competition targets have a specific color pattern that makes them fun to fill in. From the center outward, the rings are colored in pairs.

When you color the targets in our action scenes, using these official colors adds a realistic touch. You can also experiment with bright, contrasting shades if you want to design a custom practice target.

  • The center two rings (the bullseye) are yellow.
  • The next two rings are red.
  • The middle rings are light blue.
  • The outer rings are black, followed by white on the very edge.

From History to Fantasy

The bow and arrow have been used for thousands of years. Our historical and fantasy pages feature archers in different settings, from a castle defender on the battlements to an elf in the forest. These scenes allow for creative color choices. You can use earthy browns and greens for a ranger hiding in the woods, or metallic silver and gold for a knight's armor.

When coloring a modern athlete from our sports collection or a mounted archer on a galloping horse, pay attention to the tension in the bowstring. Shading the curved limbs of the bow darker on the inside can help show the stored energy right before the full draw is released. Adding shadows under the horse or behind the tree trunks grounds the characters in their environment.

Questions

What are the different colors of the archery target?

A standard target has five colors arranged in ten scoring rings. From the center outward, the colors are yellow, red, light blue, black, and white.

What is a full draw in archery?

A full draw is the position where the archer has pulled the bowstring back completely to their anchor point. At this stage, the bow holds its maximum tension just before the arrow is released.

What is the historical background of archery?

Archery was invented thousands of years ago for hunting and combat. Today, it is primarily a competitive sport and recreational activity practiced worldwide.
