Surf Terms to Talk About While Coloring
When kids color these pages, it is a great time to introduce them to the vocabulary of this popular water sport. Surfers do not just ride water; they catch swells and navigate different parts of the ocean.
- A barrel wave is the hollow part of a breaking wave where a surfer can ride completely covered by water, as seen in our girls surfing section.
- Paddling out requires a strong leash attaching the surfer's ankle to the board so it does not float away after a wipeout.
- The fins on the bottom of the board help with steering and stability, which you can see in the detailed floral fin design.
Bringing Tropical Waves to Life
Water is rarely just one shade of blue. To make the waves look realistic, try blending deep navy blues near the base of the wave with lighter turquoise and teal near the top. Leave the very top edge white to represent the sea foam crashing down.
For the backgrounds, warm colors work best. Golden yellows and soft oranges create a beautiful sunset behind the palm trees and sandy shores. If you are working on the surfing Santa pages, you can contrast his classic red suit with the bright blues of the ocean water.
