Identifying the Famous Arachnid

When coloring these pages, the most iconic feature to highlight is the bright red hourglass marking on the underside of the female's abdomen. The rest of her rounded body is typically a glossy, deep black. Male black widows and juveniles look quite different, often sporting brown or gray bodies with white, yellow, and red stripes across their backs.

You can use these printables to teach children about arachnid anatomy. Like all spiders, they have eight legs, two main body segments called the cephalothorax and abdomen, and spinnerets for producing silk. If you are putting together a science unit on creepy crawlies, these sheets pair well with a general spider coloring sheet.

Adding Color to Spiderwebs and Habitats

Black widows build irregular, tangled webs rather than neat geometric spirals. These are called cobwebs. In our web-spinning section, you will find them hiding in overturned flowerpots, among blackberry vines, and on porch railings. These dark, sheltered spots near the ground are where they prefer to wait for prey.

To make the glossy black body of the spider stand out, try using lighter, contrasting colors for the background. Soft greens, grays, and browns work well for the leaves, stones, and bark in the realistic spider pages. A silver or pale blue gel pen is an excellent tool for tracing the fine silk threads of the web, giving it a slight shimmer against the paper.

Using These Printables at Home and School

Because of their venomous reputation and striking appearance, black widows are a popular subject during the fall season. You can use the intricate mandalas and stylized line art designs as decorations. They also serve as engaging educational tools for older students studying invertebrates.

  • Print the easy outlines for younger children to practice tracing and staying within the lines.
  • Use the realistic pages showing egg sacs and prey-wrapping for biology lessons.
  • Combine these with a tarantula coloring page to compare the physical traits of different arachnid species.
