Farmyard Pig Facts for Kids

When coloring these pages, children can learn a bit about how pigs live alongside other farm animals. A mother pig is called a sow, and she can have a large litter of babies, known as piglets. You will find many pages here showing a sow caring for her young.

Pigs are highly intelligent creatures that communicate with various grunts and squeaks. They even use their strong snouts to root for food in the dirt.

The Science of Muddy Puddles

Many of our illustrations feature pigs splashing in mud. While it looks like pure fun, pigs actually roll in mud to cool down because they do not have sweat glands. The mud also acts as a natural sunscreen and protects their sensitive skin from insect bites.

Kids can use different shades of brown to color the messy puddles, or add a bright blue sky reflecting in the water.

Choosing Colors for Your Piglets

While pink is the most popular color for cartoon pigs, real pigs come in many different patterns. You can use crayons, markers, or colored pencils to experiment with different breeds.

  • Yorkshire pigs are the classic light pink farm pigs.
  • Duroc boars have a beautiful reddish-brown coat.
  • Hampshire pigs are black with a distinct white belt around their middle.
  • Wild boars feature dark brown and black bristles, which are great for our detailed realistic pages.
