Using Coloring Pages for Storytime

Reading the classic fairy tale becomes more engaging when children can color the scenes as they listen. You can hand out specific sheets as the story progresses, starting with the pigs leaving home and gathering their materials. The wolf and house scenes are highly interactive, allowing kids to act out the famous huffing and puffing lines while they color. Once the pages are finished, they can be stapled together to create a custom storybook. This gives children a tangible reward and a book they can proudly read to their family members.

Coloring the Three Houses

The different materials the brothers choose offer an excellent opportunity to practice coloring various textures. A straw bundle can be shaded in bright yellows, golds, and light browns to look dried and lightweight. For the second home, kids can use alternating shades of brown and tan to highlight the individual branches and wooden logs. The final, sturdy brick house usually features deep reds, maroons, and oranges, with gray mortar lines drawn in between the blocks. Adding a little gray smoke coming from the brick chimney shows that the pigs are warm, cooking dinner, and entirely safe inside their solid home.

Activities for Early Learners

Educators and parents frequently use this traditional folktale to teach narrative sequencing, cause and effect, and the value of taking time to do a job right. The preschool coloring pages are specifically designed with minimal background clutter so toddlers and preschoolers can focus easily on the main characters. You can easily pair these printable sheets with broader lessons about animal habitats or farm life, perhaps adding a simple pig to the day's learning activities.

  • Have children arrange their finished coloring pages in the correct chronological story order.
  • Discuss why the brick structure was the strongest and safest home against the wind.
  • Cut out the colored characters and attach them to craft sticks to make simple paper puppets for a theater show.

Crafting with the Pages

Beyond standard coloring, these sheets work well as a base for mixed-media art projects in the classroom or at home. Children can glue real pieces of dried grass onto the straw house page to give it a 3D effect. Small twigs from the yard can be glued over the stick house, and small rectangular sponges dipped in red paint can stamp a brick pattern onto the final house.
