Teaching the Traditions of Día de los Reyes Magos

The celebration of Epiphany on January 6th is a major holiday in many Hispanic cultures. Children look forward to the arrival of Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar with great anticipation. Our holiday tradition pages show familiar customs like leaving grass or hay in a shoe for the animals to eat during their long trip.

Families also gather to share a Rosca de Reyes, a sweet bread baked in the shape of a crown and decorated with candied fruits. These coloring sheets help teachers and parents introduce the cultural significance of the day while keeping kids engaged in a quiet, hands-on activity.

Coloring the Wise Men and Their Journey

The story of the Magi offers beautiful visual elements for coloring. The kings are often depicted in elaborate robes and crowns, providing a great opportunity to use rich purples, golds, and deep reds. When coloring the desert journey, children can blend dark blues and purples for the night sky behind the guiding star. The scenes at the nativity feature the kings presenting their symbolic gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

  • Use bright yellows and metallic crayons for the royal crowns and the star of Bethlehem.
  • Try earthy browns and tans for the camels and the sandy dunes.
  • Decorate the king cake with bright greens and reds to represent the traditional dried fruits.
