The Unique Shape of the Nepalese Flag

When studying world geography, the flag of Nepal always stands out. It is the only national flag in the world that is not a rectangle or square. Instead, it consists of two stacked triangles called pennons. The crimson red background represents the rhododendron, the national flower, while the blue border symbolizes peace.

  • The upper triangle features a stylized moon.
  • The lower triangle displays a twelve-pointed sun.
  • Both symbols originally represented different ruling dynasties but now stand for the hope that the country will last as long as the celestial bodies.

Himalayan Landscapes and Wildlife

Nepal is home to eight of the world's ten tallest mountains, including Mount Everest. Our Himalayan peaks pages allow children to color these dramatic mountain ranges and the suspension bridges that connect remote villages. You will also find native animals like the Himalayan monal pheasant and the red panda resting in the branches. The varied terrain provides a unique environment that transitions from subtropical forests in the south to the freezing alpine zones in the north. Students can use cool blues and stark whites for the snowy peaks, contrasting with vibrant greens for the lower valleys.

Cultural Landmarks and Traditions

The Kathmandu Valley is famous for its historic architecture and religious harmony. Children can color scenes of the Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest spherical stupas in the world, and the Swayambhunath temple complex where monkeys roam freely. These cultural coloring sheets often include details like spinning prayer wheels and colorful prayer flags strung across the wind.

Adding these pages to a lesson about South Asia pairs well with our India coloring sheets to give students a broader view of the region. Teachers can explain the traditional Namaste greeting, where people press their palms together and bow slightly to show respect. This simple gesture is a great way to start a classroom discussion about everyday life and manners in Nepalese villages.
