Understanding Mesopotamian Ziggurats

Ziggurats were massive structures built in the ancient Mesopotamian valley and western Iranian plateau. Unlike Egyptian pyramids, which were primarily built as tombs for pharaohs, a ziggurat was a terraced step pyramid that served as a bustling religious and administrative center. The most famous surviving example is the Great Ziggurat of Ur, built by King Ur-Nammu in the 21st century BCE. Students can use the architectural coloring pages to study the distinct receding tiers, monumental central staircases, and baked brick construction that defined these ancient temples.

Coloring the Ancient Landscape

When coloring these historical scenes, earthy tones work best for the monumental structures. The mud-brick walls of the temples were often sun-baked and weathered, making shades of tan, ochre, rust, and terracotta ideal choices. You can add striking contrast by coloring the surrounding desert landscapes with warm, dusty yellows and the sky with deep, vibrant blues. Many of our scenes also feature a date palm harvest or local agriculture, allowing you to bring bright greens into the fertile river valley setting where these cities thrived.

Ideas for History Lessons

These printables are helpful visual aids for middle school and elementary ancient history units. Teachers can use the cross-section pages to explain how the solid temple complexes were engineered with a core of sun-baked bricks and an exterior of fired bricks.

  • Use the daily life scenes to discuss the social hierarchy, including the roles of scribes, merchants, and the high priestess.
  • Compare the stepped architectural designs with the legendary Tower of Babel or early Mesoamerican structures.
  • Assign different tiers of the ziggurat to groups of students to color, cut out, and assemble as a large collaborative classroom poster.
