About New York City's 112th Mayor

Zohran Kwame Mamdani took office as the 112th mayor of New York City on January 1, 2026. Born in Kampala, Uganda, he moved to the city at age seven. He later worked as a housing counselor in Queens before representing the 36th district in the New York State Assembly. When he won the 2025 election with 50.4 percent of the vote, he became the city's youngest mayor since 1892, as well as its first Muslim and Asian American mayor. The first section also shows his swearing-in: Attorney General Letitia James gave him the oath of office at the old City Hall subway station.

Coloring City Life and Landmarks

The backgrounds in these sheets offer a chance to color classic urban elements. You will find pages showing the mayor riding the subway, standing on the Brooklyn Bridge, and shopping at a neighborhood grocery store. His campaign called for a rent freeze and city-owned grocery stores, and in 2026 the city picked La Marqueta in East Harlem as the site of the first one. When coloring these city scenes, use grays and browns for the architecture, and add bright blue and white for the city buses. Mamdani campaigned on making buses fare-free, which makes them a prominent feature in the New York City section.

Using These Pages in the Classroom

Teachers can use these printables when discussing local government, civic duties, or recent elections. The cartoon pages are drawn with thicker lines, making them suitable for younger students.

  • Discuss his background: Share that he graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and earned a degree in Africana studies from Bowdoin College.
  • Talk about his hobbies: Point out the pages where he plays soccer and cricket. He co-founded the cricket team at his high school.
  • Connect to civics: Pair these sheets with our Election Day coloring pages to talk about how voters choose a mayor.
