Learning About Earth Resources

Mining is how we gather important materials from the earth, like coal, metals, and precious stones. When teaching kids about natural resources, these pages help illustrate the different methods used by professionals. You can explain the difference between an open-pit mine, where materials are gathered from the surface, and an underground drift, where tunnels are dug deep into the earth. The illustrations of miners wearing hard hats and headlamps also provide a good starting point for discussing workplace safety in challenging environments.

Heavy Equipment in Action

The heavy machinery section features the massive vehicles required to move tons of earth. Kids who enjoy coloring construction vehicles will recognize the excavators and wheel loaders used to scoop and load materials. Modern mining also uses highly specialized equipment. For example, the tunnel boring machine cuts circular tunnels straight through solid stone, while continuous mining machines scrape coal or salt directly from the tunnel walls. Coloring these complex machines helps children understand the engineering required to extract resources safely and efficiently.

Coloring Crystals and Gold

The prospecting pages offer a chance to use bright, metallic colors. When coloring a sluice box or a gold pan, yellow and gold gel pens can make the nuggets stand out against the muddy brown water and gray river rocks.

For the crystal geodes and mine carts filled with gems, try blending different shades of purple, blue, or green to give the stones a glowing, translucent appearance. Adding a little white colored pencil near the edges of the crystals creates a realistic shine. You can even use silver metallic markers for the pickaxes and shovels to contrast with the dark, earthy tones of the cave walls.
