Two Types of Derby Racing
When people talk about derby cars, they usually mean one of two very different events. The first is the demolition derby, where drivers bring older, modified vehicles to a dirt track. These cars have their glass removed, doors welded shut, and heavy reinforcements added to the frame. The goal is to be the last vehicle running after crashing into the other competitors.
The second type is the pinewood racer, a staple of youth scouting groups. Kids start with a simple block of wood, plastic wheels, and metal axles. They carve, sand, and paint their designs before racing them down a sloped gravity track.
Coloring the Crash Arena
