Teaching About an Innovative Inventor

When planning lessons for Black History Month, Garrett Morgan stands out as a fascinating figure for elementary students. Born in Kentucky in 1877, he moved to Ohio and became a highly successful entrepreneur and inventor. Our general portrait pages provide a great starting point to discuss his early life and his sewing machine repair business. As students color his tailored suits and workshop gears, teachers can explain how his mechanical skills led to life-saving creations that changed modern city life.

The Three-Position Traffic Signal

The traffic signal coloring sheets highlight one of Morgan's most recognizable contributions to public safety. Before his invention, traffic signals only had stop and go indicators, which often led to collisions at the intersection when vehicles did not have enough time to clear the road. Morgan patented a T-shaped pole with a third warning position, which safely halted traffic in all directions.

  • Use bright yellow and green crayons to highlight the mechanical arms of the signal.
  • Color the vintage cars and early street scenes in muted tones so the traffic light stands out.
  • Discuss pedestrian safety while completing the street crossing illustrations.

The Safety Hood and Lake Erie Rescue

Another major focus in these educational coloring materials is Morgan's breathing device, originally called the safety hood. He designed this canvas hood with two tubes to draw clean air from near the ground, filtering out smoke and toxic gases. The safety hood illustrations depict the dramatic moment in 1916 when Morgan and his brother used the invention to rescue workers trapped in a tunnel under Lake Erie. This heroic event proved the effectiveness of his design, which later evolved into the gas masks used by soldiers during World War I. You can pair these sheets with other famous inventor pages to build a comprehensive science history unit.
