Learning about the smallest planet

Mercury is the closest planet to the sun and the smallest in our solar system. Because it has almost no atmosphere to protect it, its surface is covered in thousands of impact craters. When children color these pages, they can use shades of gray, brown, and dark charcoal to mimic this rocky, barren landscape. It looks very similar to our own moon.

Our collection includes diagrams showing the planet's internal structure, which features a massive iron core that takes up most of its interior. These educational sheets are helpful for earth science or astronomy lessons when teaching students about the inner terrestrial planets.

Coloring ideas for different ages

For younger children, we offer simple outlines where the planet has a smiling face, holds an ice pop, or is paired with bold text. These are ideal for preschool classrooms introducing basic space concepts. Kids can practice letter recognition while coloring the large, round shapes.

Older students might prefer the more detailed scenes, such as the planet transiting the sun or astronauts exploring the surface. You can add bright yellows and oranges for the sun in the background to contrast with Mercury's dark, dusty exterior. Adding a dark starry background makes the celestial bodies stand out.

Adding context to your astronomy unit

Teachers and parents often use these printable sheets as part of a broader solar system unit. You can combine the cratered planet pages with activities about orbits and telescopes.

  • Discuss how Mercury has the shortest orbital period, zooming around the sun in just 88 days.
  • Explain why the planet experiences extreme temperature changes, freezing at night and boiling during the day.
  • Use the pages showing kids with a telescope to talk about stargazing and how Mercury is sometimes visible near the horizon.

Beyond the planet: Anime heroines

Alongside the astronomical sheets, you will find a nod to pop culture with our anime sailor heroines. These magical schoolgirls represent the guardian of water and intellect.

Colorists can use varying shades of blue for their sailor uniforms and hair, matching the traditional color palette of these classic animated characters.
